EMDR Psychotherapy in Cork
Sometimes an experience from the past can continue to affect how we feel in the present.
You may notice anxiety, panic, difficulty sleeping, persistent fears or a feeling that your nervous system is constantly on alert. You may understand that an event is over, yet still find yourself reacting as though the danger is present.
I am Marie Scully, a psychotherapist and EMDR practitioner in Cork. I offer a respectful, non-judgemental space to explore whether EMDR might be helpful for you.
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is an evidence-based psychotherapy used to help people process traumatic or distressing memories. EMDR is recommended as a treatment option for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by major health organisations, including the World Health Organization.
During EMDR, a therapist guides you through a structured process that may include following movements with your eyes or other forms of alternating left-right stimulation. The aim is to help a distressing memory become less emotionally overwhelming. You do not need to describe every detail of an experience for EMDR to be considered.
Who might benefit from EMDR?
EMDR may be helpful when an upsetting experience continues to affect daily life. For example, you might notice:
- Distress linked to a road traffic accident or another frightening event
- Unwanted memories, flashbacks or nightmares
- Anxiety, panic or persistent fears associated with past experiences
- Avoiding places or situations that remind you of what happened
- Feeling unusually alert, tense or unsafe even when there is no immediate danger
Not every difficulty requires EMDR, and it is not suitable for everyone. We can discuss your circumstances and whether this approach is appropriate.
What can I expect?
We begin by getting to know what has brought you to therapy and what you would like to change. Preparation and establishing a sense of safety are important parts of EMDR. If we decide together that EMDR is suitable, we work at a pace that takes account of your individual needs and readiness.
EMDR can be a time-limited intervention, but the number of sessions varies depending on your history, circumstances and treatment goals. We can discuss a realistic plan following an initial assessment.
My approach
I bring an integrative, person-centred approach to psychotherapy, informed by an understanding of trauma and the nervous system. I aim to offer a compassionate and respectful therapeutic relationship where you can develop greater awareness of your inner experience and work towards improved wellbeing.
